BH Executive Q&A Series: Jennifer Schumann, General Counsel

January 28, 2025 |

Each month, BH features a different member of our wildly awesome Executive Team. In this Q&A format, they share thoughts on their role, their career, and the direction of the company in their own words. This month, we are excited to highlight Jennifer Schumann, General Counsel.

Q: What is the biggest BH challenge you’re currently facing? How will you overcome it?

A: Navigating the complex and ever-evolving landscape of property management laws and regulations is a major challenge, especially when managing properties across different jurisdictions. With varying tenant rights, compliance requirements, and legal implications, staying on top of these moving parts can be difficult.

Q: What is something you are most proud of working for BH?

A: The importance of culture and putting people first. If you’ve met me, you’ve heard me talk about how great BH is as a workplace. A strong company culture can greatly impact job satisfaction, employee performance, and the organization’s overall success. BH’s culture stands out because it fosters a positive work environment, strengthens relationships, and enhances the experience for every employee.

Q: What is your favorite BH value, and why?

A: It’s tough to pick just one, but “Embrace Evolution” is definitely at the top. I’m constantly amazed by the creative minds at BH. As a company, we’re always learning, experimenting, and improving. “Hear Every Voice” is also high on my list because it ties back to our culture. BH values positive and constructive feedback and actively makes changes based on it. For instance, there’s a virtual suggestion box where any employee can submit ideas, and every single one is reviewed and considered.

Q: What “keeps you up at night”?

I have a two-year-old and an almost five-year-old, so I’m usually out pretty quickly when I hit the pillow. But on the nights when my mind keeps going, I find myself thinking about ways to reduce risk and develop clear policies that can effectively guide decision-making.

A: What helps you sleep at night? (In other words, what things help you handle the everyday challenges of your position?)

I find comfort in knowing I’ve built strong relationships with my colleagues, where they feel comfortable raising legal concerns and questions early on. This way, we can work together to solve problems before they become more significant challenges.

Q: What do you like to do in your free time to relax?

A: Lots of hot yoga! I started practicing almost 10 years ago when I moved to Des Moines, and I haven’t stopped since. There’s not much that a solid workout in a 100-degree room can’t help with. It’s my go-to for clearing my mind and resetting.
